What is NFC Technology?
NFC’s full form is Near Field Communication Technology means short-distance wireless communication technology. It means that when two different people have NFC on their devices and it is very close to each other (around 4 cm), then they can communicate with each other with the help of radio waves. It can transfer information quickly and easily with a single touch only. It can be used to pay bills, download coupons, exchange business cards, share documents, etc.
Yes, NFC technology is totally safe for everyone and it can be used by everyone because it is designed to operate between devices that are just a few centimeters (3-4) away from each other, and attackers are not able to record the communication between these devices. As Compared to other technologies, which work in distances of meters meanwhile, NFC technology works only in a few centimeters so, the security level of this NFC technology is higher compared to other technologies.
One of the two devices should be an active device while the other one can be an active or passive device. An active device means that the device requires an external power supply (power bank) while a passive device doesn’t require any external power supply and can be powered by the device charger only.
How does NFC Technology work?
As we discussed before, NFC communicates with each other using radio waves, and these waves are generated using the antenna. Using these antennas, these devices are able to connect with each other. It transfers the data through radio waves, to allow communication between two devices.
Both devices should have NFC chips because transaction happens within a very short distance. These devices must be in few centimeters from each other for data transfer to happen.
When did NFC Technology start?
NFC technology started making headlines in 2002 with Philips and Sony. Then in 2006, the Nokia 6131 phone was the first device to provide NFC functionally, and since then continued to develop.
How did NFC Technology work with new features?
Google Pay has recently launched a new feature in India, “Tap to pay for UPI”, in collaboration with Pine Labs. And this feature makes use of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.
It will allow users with UPI accounts on Google Pay to make payments by just tapping their NFC-enabled smartphones on any pine labs android POS terminal. Once tap then it will automatically open the Google Pay app with the payment amount pre-filled by users. Users can then verify the amount and person’s name and authenticate the payment using the UPI pin. This process is much faster as compared to others like scanning a QR code or entering the UPI Linked mobile number.
Apart from payments, other applications of NFC technology are-
- It is a contactless banking card to perform banking transactions. It means we don’t need even ATM cards or credit cards for transactions in the future.
- It can be used to generate online tickets for public transport like buses.
- It can be used for securing networks and you can monitor your inventory and sales with this technology.
- It can be used for keeping tabs on library books and also can be used in wireless charging too.
- It can be used in healthcare or hospital too, to monitor all patient reports or data through NFC-enabled wristbands.
- It is also helpful in running unmanned toll booths.
- Just with a touch, NFC technology can also set up Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices in our homes.
- It is also present in speakers, household appliances, or other electronic devices that we control through our mobile phones.
